Pregnancy Reassurance Scan Illawarra
A reassurance scan can offer a calming check-in between your scheduled diagnostic ultrasounds. If your pregnancy journey has felt hard (whether due to previous loss, multiple losses, or difficult circumstances outside of pregnancy), having that extra look can bring real peace of mind. Even with an uncomplicated pregnancy, it’s completely normal to want reassurance. If it’s still too early to feel movement, or if it’s been a while between diagnostic scans, a quick peek at your baby can be enough to help you breathe easier and reset your mindset.

What is a Reassurance Scan?
A pregnancy reassurance scan is a gentle “check-in” designed to help you feel calmer between your formal diagnostic ultrasounds.
If you’ve had a tough pregnancy journey, previous loss, anxiety – because its still to early to feel movement, or if it’s been a while between diagnostic scans, this scan can be a comforting reset.
What to expect during your Reassurance Scan
Before your appointment:
- If you’re under 22 weeks: come with a comfortably full bladder (not uncomfortably full)
- After 22 weeks: no special preparation is usually needed
- You’re welcome to bring your partner, family or friends – and children too (with a second adult there to supervise.)
During the scan (5-10 mins):
Your sonographer will apply warm gel to your tummy and glide the ultrasound probe over your abdomen to show your baby on the screen.
A Cheeky Monkey Reassurance Scan is:
- 5 to 10 minutes
- 2D imaging only
- A chance to see your baby’s heartbeat
- A relaxed moment to watch baby’s movement (depending on gestation and positioning.)
You can ask questions about what you’re seeing and will be guided through the experience in a calm, supportive way.
After the scan:
You’ll receive your images via a downloadable link sent to your mobile, so you can save and share them easily.
Important note: Reassurance scans are not a diagnostic ultrasound and don’t replace the medical scans your doctor or midwife refers you for. If you have pain, bleeding, reduced movements, or urgent concerns, contact your healthcare provider.

When is the best time during pregnancy to book in for a Reassurance scan?
With Cheeky Monkey, a pregnancy reassurance scan is available from 8 weeks onwards. Best time to book depends on what you want from the visit:
- For early peace of mind (heartbeat “check-in”): From 8 weeks onwards is a common sweet spot because it’s still early, but you’re far enough along that an ultrasound is often more reassuring for many people.
- Any time you’re feeling anxious between your medical scans: If symptoms change, it’s too early to feel movement, or you just want a quick look, you can book in any time from 8 weeks onwards (it’s designed as a comfort scan between formal diagnostic ultrasounds).
- If you’re actually hoping for 3D “face” style images: That’s a different goal than a 2D reassurance check. Find out more about 3D Ultrasound here.
Why Choose Cheeky Monkey 3D Ultrasound Studio?
At Cheeky Monkey, 3D images and 4D videos clips are generated by the Mindray System. The latest probe and software technology, such as SmartFace, developed by Mindray, make for amazing, realistic images.
Cheeky Monkey is the first stand-alone 3D ultrasound studio servicing the Illawarra and South Coast. The studio is a welcoming space for families and friends to share the experience of seeing the baby. Children are welcome to come along provided a second adult is in attendance for supervision. I have been sharing pregnancy journeys with hundreds, possibly thousands, of local women for more than 20 years scanning with South Coast Ultrasound for Women. Obstetric Ultrasound is my passion and supporting the mental health of pregnant women by facilitating the bond between mother and child is an added honour.

3D vs 4D Ultrasounds – what is the difference?
The traditional black and white ultrasound images we are all familiar with are what we call 2D images. Using specialised equipment a 3D Ultrasound image gives us a real-life representation of how your baby looks while in utero. It’s the closest thing to your unborn child’s first photoshoot. You may have even heard of 4D ultrasound. This is when we capture the baby moving in 3D, in real time.
Is a 3D Ultrasound safe?
Diagnostic and entertainment ultrasound are considered safe if performed by a fully qualified medical sonographer.
How much does a 3D ultrasound cost?
Prior to your appointment, you will receive details of a free App to download called Tricefy where your images can be accessed at the conclusion of the scan. We all like a good photo for the fridge too!! If you would like printed images, this can be done for you with 6 images/A4 at a cost of $5 a sheet.
The cost for a 3D scan is $180 for 15-20 minutes. All 2D and 3D images are included via the Tricefy app. Available 22-34 weeks gestation.
If you would like to see the baby moving in real time (4D), this can be attempted on request for an additional $20. All videos available via the Tricefy app. If you have noticed a pattern with baby’s movements, aim to book the session when baby is more likely to be active.
